Colocation, cloud or dedicated server? How to choose the right infrastructure for your company

A practical comparison of colocation, cloud servers and dedicated servers: cost, control, scalability and data residency, with a simple way to decide.

Every company that runs its own applications eventually faces the same question: where should our servers live? The three most common answers — colocation, cloud servers and dedicated servers — can all be the right choice. The trick is matching the model to your workload, your team and your budget.

The three models in one paragraph each

Colocation. You own the hardware; the data center provides the space, redundant power, cooling, physical security and connectivity. You keep full control of the equipment and pay a predictable monthly fee per rack unit, quarter, half or full rack.

Cloud servers (and VPS). You rent virtual machines on the provider's infrastructure. No hardware to buy, capacity in minutes, and you pay monthly for the size you choose. Ideal for workloads that change or that you want running fast.

Dedicated servers. The provider owns the physical server and rents it to you entirely. You get the performance and isolation of your own machine without buying it, and the provider replaces failed hardware.

When colocation wins

  • You already own servers, storage or network equipment with years of life left.
  • You need specific hardware: GPUs, appliances, licensed systems tied to physical machines.
  • Your auditors require full control of the equipment — common in banking, payments and government.
  • Your workload is large and stable, so owning the hardware is cheaper over three to five years.

When the cloud wins

  • You are launching something new and don't know how big it will get.
  • Demand changes by season, campaign or time of day.
  • You don't want to manage hardware at all.
  • You need test and development environments that come and go.

When a dedicated server wins

  • Your database or application needs consistent performance with no noisy neighbours.
  • You want physical isolation without buying and maintaining hardware.
  • Your usage is steady enough that a fixed monthly price beats paying for cloud resources by size.

Don't forget data residency and latency

Where your data physically sits matters. Hosting in Costa Rica keeps your information in the country, which simplifies conversations about Costa Rica's personal data protection law (Ley 8968) and contractual requirements from your own customers. It also keeps latency low for users in Costa Rica and Central America compared with servers in North America or Europe.

The answer is often a mix

Many of our customers combine models: their core database on a dedicated server or in colocation, web front-ends and new projects on cloud servers, and off-site backups in the same data center. Because everything sits on the same network, the parts talk to each other privately and quickly.

A simple way to decide

  1. List your workloads and mark each one as steady or variable.
  2. Note which ones need special hardware or full control for compliance.
  3. Estimate three-year cost for each option, including hardware refresh for colocation.
  4. Check where your data must legally and contractually reside.
  5. Price the result in our live price builder and talk to an engineer about the details.
